Executive team
Our trustees (known as the Board of Trustees) delegate the day-to-day management of Marie Curie to our Chief Executive, Matthew Reed, who appoints the Executive Team, made up of the charity’s most senior managers.

Matthew has been Chief Executive of Marie Curie since February 2019 having previously served as Chief Executive of The Children’s Society , Chief Executive of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and a director at Christian Aid .
Before that, Matthew was a parish priest where he had the privilege of caring for a number of people in the last chapter of their lives.
Matthew is passionate about social justice and inclusion and ensuring that everyone has the very best chance to thrive and flourish in all aspects of their life. This includes ensuring that everyone who is dying – and their families and loved ones – have the very best holistic support for life and clinical care they can. Matthew is now leading Marie Curie in our aspiration for everyone who is dying – and their loved ones – to have the best possible quality of life and experience, and for that to reflect what is most important to them.
Matthew is chair of trustees of New Horizon Youth Centre which provides unique, holistic support for young people in London experiencing homelessness, and a lay Member of Council (non exec) at the University of Liverpool .
He has a degree in Theology from the University of Oxford, a degree in Engineering and Management from the University of Nottingham, and a Masters in Management from the University of Surrey.

Maria joined Marie Curie in December 2021 to provide leadership to the Innovation, Income and Engagement Directorate. This team includes Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, Retail and Digital.
Maria joins us from Guide Dogs, where she was Fundraising and Commercial Director and transformed fundraising resulting in the charity doubling its income and becoming one of the top 10 charities in the UK. Maria is looking to increase Marie Curie's brand profile, grow sustainable income streams and ensure that Marie Curie is a leading voice on dying, death and bereavement.
Maria has worked in PR, Marketing and Fundraising roles for her entire career, having worked at the RNLI and the British Liver Trust prior to Guide Dogs.
Maria is a Trustee at Battersea Cats & Dogs Home and a member of the Institute of Fundraising.
Mike Cadden, Chief Technology Officer

Mike joined Marie Curie in September 2023 as Chief Technology Officer.
Prior to working at Marie Curie, Mike has had a successful career in IT and business transformation across a range of international clients, such as Expedia, VIA Outlets, StartRite Shoes, Primark, Ralph Lauren, The Wine Society and Musgrave Retail.
With over 20 years' experience leading business and IT transformation, Mike is passionate about delivering customer centric change, ensuring that IT and the business are fully aligned to deliver against their goals.
Mike has a Bsc in IT and Education from Stirling University and an Exec MBA from Worcester University.

Matthew Joined Marie Curie as Chief Financial Officer in September 2023 as a member of the Executive leadership team, taking responsibility for Finance, Procurement, Internal Audit and Compliance.
Matthew has over 20 years' experience in the accounting profession gained in a variety of roles encompassing both commercial and operational leadership. A rounded financial services executive, Matthew is able to combine strategic business leadership and financial discipline with a record for delivering transformational change. Prior to joining Marie Curie, Matthew held senior positions in a range of Financial Service businesses, including Close Brothers, Metro Bank and Embark Group.
Matthew studied for his Chartered Accountancy qualification at Deloitte where he spent 7 years in their audit function and is now a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Kelly Young joined Marie Curie in 2022 as General Counsel and Company Secretary.
Kelly is a highly skilled solicitor with over 15 years' corporate and commercial experience, providing expert advice to multiple Boards and stakeholders. Most recently she was General Counsel and Company Secretary at the Motor Insurers' Bureau.
Kelly sits on the Executive Leadership Team and provides leadership for the Corporate Governance & Legal Directorate, which comprises Marie Curie's in-house Legal and Company Secretarial teams.
Nina Vendemiati, Chief People Officer

Nina joined Marie Curie in August 2022 to lead our People directorate. This team includes HR, Volunteering, People Transformation, Learning and Development, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Wellbeing, and Internal Communications.
Nina was previously at cancer care company, GenesisCare, where she led HR across Europe. She has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of Human Resources including HR transformation, change projects and culture, across a number of industries. She has also held a number of senior board roles, such as ten years as Vice President of Human Resources for Emerson, a global engineering & manufacturing organisation, and several non-Executive director roles such as the Welsh Ambulance Service.
Nina has recently moved back to the UK from Madrid, where she was on assignment with GenesisCare.
Dr Sarah Holmes, Chief Medical Officer

Sarah was appointed Chief Medical Officer in April 2023 and continues to undertake some clinical work at our Bradford hospice.
Sarah originally joined Marie Curie in 2001 working at the Edinburgh hospice as a junior doctor, having initially pursued a career in General Practice. The experience working in Edinburgh inspired her to retrain in palliative medicine, and she became Consultant in Palliative Medicine and Medical Director of Marie Curie Hospice, Bradford in 2007. In July 2020, Sarah became UK Medical Director for Marie Curie, and combined this role with her ongoing clinical work in the hospice in Bradford.
Sarah is passionate about ensuring better end of life care for all, especially for marginalised groups, and in delivering truly person-centred care as part of a place based approach.

Having joined Marie Curie in November 2020, Sam was appointed Executive Director of Policy and Research in April 2023. Since starting with the charity, Marie Curie has successfully campaigned for the introduction of an explicit legal requirement for palliative care services to be commissioned in every part of England, and initiated the "UK Commission on Bereavement" – an independent commission exploring changes needed to policy and practice to better support bereaved people. Following publication of ground-breaking new research identifying the number of people dying in poverty each year, Marie Curie also recently launched the "Dying in Poverty" campaign, calling for key changes to ensure no one faces poverty at the end of life.
Sam was previously Policy Director at The Children's Society and is also a former chair of the End Child Poverty coalition. Prior to that, Sam completed his PhD in the Social Policy department at the University of York, at which point he was also an adviser at a Citizens Advice Bureau. He is also author of the book "Broken Benefits: What's gone wrong with welfare reform".

Andrew was appointed Chief Place and Service Delivery Officer in August 2023, to lead the delivery and innovation of our services across our 10 place-based nations and regions as well as our Information and Support services.
Andrew originally joined Marie Curie from the NHS in 1998 working as a Staff Nurse at the Hospice in Cardiff and the Vale. Andrew then moved back to the NHS to lead the development of the Specialist Palliative Care service at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, returning to Marie Curie in 2000. Since then, Andrew has held several clinical, professional, and operational management and leadership roles, most recently Interim Director of National Programmes and Place Based Systems and then Director of Service Delivery, leading the Caring Services transition to integrated place-based structures and leading operational teams through the pandemic.
Andrew has also held several committee and trustee roles during his career, most recently as Chair of the Film and Television Charity.
Andrew is passionate about the delivery of individualised person-centred hospice care, co-designing and delivering services that meet the needs of diverse populations.
Annette Weatherley, Chief Nursing Officer

A nurse of 34 years, Annette is a highly experienced and respected leader across the health care sector. She joins us from HCA Healthcare UK where since 2017 she has held various roles including Regional Chief Nursing Officer, Regional Chief Operating Officer. Prior to this, Annette was Acting Chief Nurse at University Hospital South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust and Deputy Chief Nurse before which was Director of Nursing at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Annette has a strong academic background across nursing and business development. Having completed her traditional nurse training in 1990 she went on to complete a BSc in ‘Nursing Practice’, a MSc in ‘Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care’ and a Harvard Executive Development programme.
As the Chief Nursing Officer, Annette will provide visible clinical leadership and direction for the development of clinical practice to our nurses, allied health professionals, health care assistants and clinical support workers. Annette will also be a thought leader, sharing best practice and innovative models of care with the wider sector and across all four nations. Annette will help us to ensure that patients and their loved ones get the very best experience and highest standard of patient-centred care. Annette is based in Lancashire and will have the Marie Curie Hospice in Liverpool as her usual place of work.
