What we do in Northern Ireland

Marie Curie is the largest charitable provider of end of life care in Northern Ireland.

We provide expert hospice care at home across all of Northern Ireland. We also provide palliative care services and bereavement counselling, including in our Belfast hospice, for people living within the Belfast and South Eastern Trust.

As well as policy and campaigning, we're the largest charitable funder of research to improve end of life care.

You'll also find Companion volunteers and Marie Curie charity shops throughout the province.

Hospice care at home

Marie Curie Nurses and Healthcare Assistants work in Northern Ireland to care for people in their own homes across all five trust areas. Read our latest inspection reports.

Hospices

At our Belfast hospice we offer active and tailored treatment for people living with any terminal illness – that includes all cancers, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and end stage lung, liver, heart or renal disease.

The hospice provides short-term inpatient care, structured outpatient day services and holistic family support.

Our community-facing and outpatient services support both patient and carer needs in the Belfast and South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust areas.

Companion Volunteers

Our trained Companion at home volunteers regularly visit people living with terminal illness to have a chat over a cup of tea, help them get to an appointment, or just listen when they need a friendly ear. The Helper service also means a family or carer can rely on someone being there when they need a break or someone to talk to.

Marie Curie charity shops

We have 10 shops in Northern Ireland selling a wonderful range of clothes, accessories, homeware and more at great prices. There are several ways to support them – whether through shopping, volunteering or donating your pre-loved things. Our Dunmurry shop is one of the first in the UK to have a community hub where visitors can talk to a trained ambassador about our nursing care and range of services. Find your nearest shop.

Policy and public affairs

We work closely with politicians and policy makers to inform, influence and improve policies and strategies in Northern Ireland. We also campaign for changes to legislation and regulation, and work in partnership with others to improve palliative and end of life care.

Latest: In partnership with Carers NI  , we’re leading a campaign to improve the policy environment for older people who are caring for terminally-ill loved ones in Northern Ireland. Throughout 2019, we’ll be engaging with elected representatives, policy-makers and health and social care bodies to ensure these older carers are able to access the information and support they need to look after their own health and wellbeing while caring.

Research

Marie Curie is the UK’s leading charitable funder of palliative and end of life care research. We fund our own researchers, and work in partnership with other organisations, to ensure high-quality research that informs how end of life care is and should be provided.
